A little over two years ago, it was announced that Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin was working with four different scripts for a potential Game of Thrones spinoff. At the time of the series finale, it was reported that the number of scripts had increased to five. However, Brutal Spy reports that HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys clarified the network’s vision for a spinoff:

“The idea is not to do four shows [or five, as we now know]. The bar set by [showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it.”

Network and media executives linked to the GOT franchise are carefully exploring how best to expand on the show’s success without killing the “golden goose.”

One of the productive steps already taken has been the decision to do a prequel instead of a sequel. Author George R.R. Martin stated that all of the potential shows are prequels:

More than likely, if the series is completely shot, edited, and all other post-production tasks are taken care of, then I don’t see this prequel airing on HBO until 2021. Game of Thrones first debuted on April 11, 2011. I can see the prequel debuting in April 2021. And guess what? The 11^th falls on a Sunday in April of that year. Wouldn’t that be cool to have the prequel debut on the same date of the original show’s debut, just 10 years later?

That’s also what makes it incredibly disappointing that HBO won’t even explore the possibility of a spinoff involving Arya. From the moment she killed the Night King to her attempts to leave the city when fire was raining down, and to her sailing off into the unknown, millions of fans have shouted their desire to see more of Arya.

Will HBO Air a Game of Thrones Spinoff of Jon Snow in 2021?

When we last saw Mr. Snow, he was leaving his banishment to Castle Black and leading the free folk back into the forest. He successfully defended the living, ended a potential tyranny, and brought the story full circle from the creation of the Night King by the Children of the Forest to returning mankind into the forest.

Of all of the characters, Snow got a symbolic and peaceful conclusion to his story. For me, I don’t see any reason why they should do a Jon Snow show. There’s not much left for us to watch. In fact, some could say that Game of Thrones was already a Jon Snow show. Unlike Arya, as her character continued to evolve, Jon Snow has appeared to reach his final destination symbolically and in the storyline.

I did not like the series finale for Game of Thrones. And no matter what the cast or executives from HBO say, the show did not have a satisfying conclusion.
